A New England town in Summit County

Two kinds of Hudson house, one careful approach

Hudson grew from the Connecticut Western Reserve, settled mainly by families from New England. The Hudson Library & Historical Society’s short history of the town traces the village’s incorporation in 1837 and the merger with the surrounding township in January 1994. Today’s city brings together an older village center and the residential areas that grew up around it.

For painting, that mix shows up quickly. A traditional two-story home tends to have a lot of trim: window casings, shutters, cornices, and a front entry that sets the tone for the whole house. Clean lines on those details matter as much as the color on the siding. Newer homes bring their own questions, such as two-story foyers, long stairwell walls, and open rooms where it isn’t obvious where one color should stop.

From JMU’s project gallery: shutters, window trim, and the front entry each get their own attention on an exterior repaint.

Before an estimate, walk the house and note what you want included. Outside, that might be the shutters, the front door, a porch ceiling, or a detached garage. Inside, list the rooms, the ceilings, and any trim or woodwork you would rather keep exactly as it is.

Own a historic home? Check before you replace anything

Hudson takes its historic buildings seriously. According to the city’s Historic Preservation page, any project that replaces building materials or changes the appearance of a historic structure requires City approval. Projects are measured against the city’s Architectural Design Standards and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.

Painting on its own is treated differently from replacement work. The city’s home-improvement FAQ says painting does not require a zoning certificate, while projects such as residing and window or door replacement do. The practical point for a repaint is the wood underneath. If prep turns up trim or siding that needs replacing rather than repairing, talk to the city before that part of the work is scheduled.

Not sure whether your home is in the historic district?
The Historic Preservation page links to a map of the district, and the Community Development department can confirm it at 330-342-1790.
Curious about your home’s original details?
The Hudson Heritage Association publishes house reports for properties registered with the association. They are a useful starting point when you want new paint to suit an older house.
Planning more than paint?
If the project also includes new siding, windows, or doors, start that conversation with the city early. It can affect when the painting can begin.

Kitchen cabinets without a full remodel

When the layout still works but the finish looks tired, painting or refinishing the cabinets can change the whole room. JMU cleans, sands, de-glosses, caulks, and finishes cabinet doors and frames together, so the kitchen looks consistent when it’s done.

A few decisions make the estimate conversation easier. Are you keeping the current hardware or changing it? Is it just the kitchen, or also a bathroom vanity or built-in shelving? And how will the household manage meals while the kitchen is being worked on? Read more about JMU’s cabinet refinishing before you decide on paint or stain.

Offices, shops, and other business properties

JMU’s commercial painting covers offices, retail spaces, and commercial interiors in Hudson. For an occupied building, bring a list of rooms, your opening hours, and the areas that need to stay accessible. That way the work can be planned around your business rather than the other way around.

The city’s Historic Preservation page also mentions the historic downtown district. If your building is downtown and you’re planning exterior changes beyond a repaint, check with Community Development about what needs review before you settle on a scope.

Bring us the project you have in mind

For a house, a few photos and a list of rooms or exterior surfaces are a good start. Mention the details that are easy to forget, such as shutters, porch ceilings, stairwell walls, and doors. For a business, add your hours and the order in which you’d like the spaces done.

JMU is based in Akron and serves Hudson and the surrounding Summit County communities. Browse our project gallery, or send the details for a free estimate. Nearby, we also have local guides for Cuyahoga Falls and Akron.
